Why This Sadness?
Why this sadness?
He asks
with perceptive simplicity
His eyes glimmering with hope and sincerity
that my answer or search thereof
will lead to enlightenment
My answer is welling up inside
My heart is crying out the answer
but my lips can't articulate it
I am left to answer lamely
“I don't know”
but, I do.
This sadness is for love lost
This sadness is for love that may never be
This sadness is for shattered hopes
This sadness is for the pain of words spoken
This sadness is for words that will never be uttered
This sadness is for broken hearts and promises
This sadness is for the bitter disappointment of unmet expectations
This sadness is for the realization of what has happened
This sadness is for dreams that will never come true
This sadness is for an ending that may not be “Happily Ever After”
This sadness is for this thing we call life, and for our pathetic failed attempts to love one another the way we ought
Why this sadness?
Because it is the human lot
Because sometimes the most beautiful things can grow from a heart of true sorrow
For in sorrow comes reflection and in reflection comes perspective and articulation of feeling
And with articulation of feelings comes expression
and with expression comes understanding
and with understanding comes reconciliation
and perhaps a new beginning
for that happy ending.
